Our Story – Umbrellas since 1860

The long history of the Talarico company tells a story of generational passion and carries the charm of a unique craft rooted in Neapolitan tradition.

Founded in 1860 in Naples by Giovanni Buongiovanni, the company was originally named “Al Giapponese” and had a retail shop at Via Chiaia 76/77, another at Via Roma 198, and a workshop in Via Sergente Maggiore, where umbrellas, parasols, walking sticks, and fans were handcrafted.

The tradition continued with Emilia Buongiovanni, Giovanni’s daughter, who married the renowned violinist Achille Talarico, son of the even more celebrated royal court painter Achille Talarico Sr., who had moved from Catanzaro to Naples to study with Mancinelli at the prestigious Posillipo School of Painting.

From the union of Emilia and Achille was born Giovanni Talarico who, together with Concetta Carlevalis, carried on the artisanal tradition of master umbrella makers into its third generation.

The workshop and retail store were moved to Vico Due Porte a Toledo 4/B (the current headquarters of Mario Talarico Since 1860).

From their union were born seven children: Rosaria, Emilia, Mario, Antonio, Alfredo (father of the current owner Mario), Roberto, and Giuseppe.

The fourth generation continues with Mario Talarico, who upholds the tradition of crafting umbrellas made with solid wood shafts, fine silks from San Leucio, and precious handles such as genuine horn, bamboo, Sorrento lemon wood, cherry wood, and more.

Today, the historic Mario Talarico since 1860 workshop exports its umbrellas worldwide and has crafted pieces for Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis, King Charles III, and Prince William of England, as well as Hollywood actors such as Russell Crowe, international celebrities, singers, and athletes.

The company has also become an official supplier to the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and to Prince Antonio De Curtis, known as Totò.

In 2022, it received official recognition for professional excellence from the International Golden Lion Award of Venice, and in 2023 it was honored by SDA Bocconi and American Express with the award “Excellence in Local Retail.”
